Nintendo has released more information about their combination home-and-portable system,Female Instructor’s Strange Private Lesson (2025) the Switch, in a presentation streamed from Tokyo tonight.
Here's what we know.
The Nintendo Switch will release worldwide on March 3 at $299.99. Here's what comes in the box:
Nintendo's NY store is so far the only confirmed North American location that will be offering pre-orders. Japan's pre-orders open on Jan. 21.

The Switch has two main modes: at home play, and on the go. When docked into its base, The Nintendo Switch can be played traditionally -- on your TV.
Or you can slide the Switch out of its dock to play on the go. You can play the Switch wirelessly, unlike the Wii U whose gamepad had a limited range of functionality between it and its homebase. The Switch even has a kickstand to prop it up wherever your gaming might take you.
Though online services will be free at launch as a trial, they'll soon transition to a paid subscription service in the fall. No word on pricing yet, but subscribers will get a free NES or SNES game a month and Nintendo promises other special offers to come, too.
We've already known that the Switch is powered by a custom NVIDIA custom Tegra processor, reportedly meant to preserve as much battery life as possible. Nintendo tonight suggested the battery lifespan to clock in anywhere around two and a half to six hours, depending on the game. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, for instance, can apparently be played for about 3 hours on one charge. Once you've hit that maximum, the Switch uses a USB-C charger cable that you can use while playing. The Switch has 32GB of internal memory, some of which is used by the system, but you can upgrade that storage with micro SDXC cards.
Nintendo also confirmed that the Switch features a multi-touch, 6.2-inch screen that displays at 1280 x 720 and, as the initial trailer suggested, can be connected with up to eight consoles total.
Unlike its latest predecessors, the Switch uses game cartridges, not discs. And in what will for some surely be the happiest news, Nintendo is doing away with software region-locking. Region free!
The Switch's palm-sized Joy-Con controllers might look dainty, but they pack a lot of power. They feature motion control, an accelerometer and a rumble. There's also a "Capture" button currently outfitted for grabbing screenshots mid-game, similar to the Playstation 4's "Share" button. The controllers come in grey, neon blue and neon red colors.
At home you'll most likely be playing either with two mini Joy-Con controllers attached to the Joy-Con Grip for a more traditional controller look:
Or the much more traditional pro controller (sold separately):
To play on the go, you can either attach two Joy-Con controllers to either ends of the Switch for single player play.
Or share the controllers for multiplayer games:
You can use the Joy-Con controllers separately for solo play, too (reminiscent of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk combo):
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wind, which will launch with the Switch on March 3.
The next Super Mariogame, called Odyssey.
A Splatoonsequel.
Mario Kart 8.
1-2 Switch-- a collection of party games that has players face off in front of one another.
A goofy-looking fighting game called Arms.
Other games shown off during the presentation included Fire Emblem Warriors, Xenoblade Chronicles 2and Skyrim. Nintendo later uploaded trailers for Super Bomberman R, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and Sonic Mania.
In a presentation-ending sizzle reel, Nintendo also announced that both the perennial classic Minecraft and Ultra Street Fighter IIwill release on the Switch.

Based on the initial reveal trailer, it looks like Splatoon 2 will be at least one game to take advantage of the Switch's ability to connect to other consoles. And it looks like there'll be a specific esports element there, too:
Other confirmed games coming to Switch are Shovel Knight, Dragon Quest XI, Dragon Quest X, Just Dance 2017, Steep, Rayman Legends Definitive Edition, Project Sonic 2017, Rime, Seasons of Heaven, Cube Life: Island Survival, Constructor, Skylanders Imaginators, FIFAand Lego City Undercover.
Nintendo also previously shared a sneak peek at some other partners we can expect games from for the console:
Dock set: $89.99
Joy-Con controllers: $79.99 for a pair, $49.99 individually
Joy-Con charging grip: $29.99
The Pro controller: $69.99
Joy-Con wheel: $14.99 for a pair
We'll be going hands-on with the Switch tomorrow and should have more news and impressions shortly after. The Switch will also be going on a multi-city tour on Sundays between this weekend and March 5.
